Yorker Artillery

Established in the early 1980's, the Artillery operates two exact copies of a 4.5-inch Cohorn mortar and a 3-pdr. Grasshopper field piece. The mortar tube may also be fitted to the 3-pdr carriage and used as a Moritzer. This being similar to a Howitzer. This gives three different versions of the artillery and makes for a very versatile presentation.

In keeping with the tradition as old as cannons themselves, our 3pdr has a name. It is called Priapus, after the Greek god of fertility. The name is on a small brass plaque mounted on the carriage, along with the opinion of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, that our cannon makes "A Jolly Good Bang." Since the Queen is the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Artillery, her remark is a special honor.

The Artillery Company appears with the regiment or on its own, and over the years has made many appearances at both large and small events, ranging from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Royal Visit in 1984, to being the starting gun at local marathon races. The real highlight events are battle re-enactments at historic sites.
